A Christmas Special: Navidad Jíbara y Gitana - La Casa Encantada - Show # 11 - Friday Dec. 13 and Dec. 20 2013

This is a very special show for Your Ghost Host. Aired on Dec. 13 and Dec. 20 2013, it is a CHRISTMAS SPECIAL called "NAVIDAD JÍBARA Y GITANA".
We tried to prove to the unbelievers that, contrary to what seems logical, there IS good Christmas music.

In order to demonstrate it we went from Spain to Puerto Rico and from México to Colombia listening to Cumbias, Rumbas, Seis Chorreaos, Aguinaldos, Rancheras, Bulerías and much more! Illustrious names such as Ramito, Chuíto, La Calandria, Maso Rivera con el Conjunto Típico Ladi, Lola Flores y Antonio González, Los Amaya y su Combo Gitano, Chacho, Bambino, Pedro Laza y sus Pelayeros, José Alfredo Jiménez... A real family show!

NO ROOSTERS WERE HARMED DURING THE MAKING OF THIS SHOW.

An All-American Show - La Casa Encantada - Show #10 - Friday, Dec. 13 2013

The Haunted House @ KUSF - Show 10 - "An All-American Show With Leadbelly and Friends" Dec 13 2013 by Casaencantada on Mixcloud

On this day at the Haunted House we celebrated the history of Huddie Ledbetter, aka Leadbelly (b. Jan. 20 1888 in Luisiana, d. Dec. 6 in NYC) with "An All-American Show featuring Leadbelly and Friends". This show was originally to be aired on Dec. 6 but bad luck came one week earlier for us.

We followed John and Alan Lomax through those prison trips in 1934 and played a good bunch of songs that Leadbelly taught us in several different versions: from Blind Lemon Jefferson doing "Matchbox Blues" to Mainer's Mountaineers with their version of "John Henry", plus James "Iron Head" Baker and his prison group doing "Black Betty", The Carter Family with "John Hardy", Son House with "Death Letter Blues", and a lot more, including plenty of songs by Leadbelly himself!
We went cajun with Nathan Abshire, rock'n'roll with Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and Roy Orbison, and even mambo with Perez Prado!
All in songs that Leadbelly sung (well, mostly!)

A Mediterranean Thanksgiving - La Casa Encantada - Show #9 - Friday, Nov. 21 2013

On our 9th show we bring you a mixed celebration and thanksgiving for a happy array of events all of which are oddly related: the Independence of Lebanon, the Birth of Fairuz, the Independence of Morocco, the Deaths of Franco and Durruti, the births of Falla and Billy the Kid... But don't you think we are forgetting about turkey either (the animal, not the country).
So we salute Lebanon in their independence day with great Fairuz in her 78th birthday and with Sabah, as well as with Lebanese American king of Surf guitar Mr. Dick Dale. Representing the Moroccan independence we have Hanino and Mahmoud Guinia. And there in between we go to Spain with La Niña de los Peines and Manuel de Falla, to Congo with Franco and TPOK Jazz, and we have a Thanksgiving feast of Mashed Potatoes and Turkey with Clark Kessinger and James Brown, and much more!
All comes with our usual and traditional Calypso-and-Bollywood gravy!

The Haunted House is broadcasted live every Friday at 3:00pm Pacific Time on kusf.org. To listen, go to kusf.org and click "listen now" or go to your itunes>radio>college>KUSF.

Adam and Eve - La Casa Encantada - Show #8 - Friday, Nov. 8 2013

On the 8th show of the Haunted House we remembered John Milton, who died Nov. 8th 1674. Thus we  talked

OF Mans First Disobedience, and the Fruit
Of that Forbidden Tree, whose mortal tast
Brought Death into the World, and all our woe
With loss of Eden...

In other words, and in other worlds, we told the story of Adam and Eve and how we bit that bitter fruit of knowledge!
We had Jorge Ben, Lord Flea, Bob Marley, Paul Anka, Laurel Aitken, the Tune Wranglers, S. D. Burman, The Lincoln Trio, Spade Cooley, Charlie Parker, Sidney Bechet, Sexteto Habanero and several other artists telling us their view on Creation, Adam, Eve and this Garden of Eden!

El Día de los Muertos - La Casa Encantada - Show #7 - Friday, Nov. 1 2013

Today we celebrate the only inescapable fact of life: Death.
This is El día de los Muertos, día de Todos los Santos, so we talk about La Parca, La Huesuda, La Dama Fría, la Muerte.
We begin by asking the protection of the Orisha Goddess that controls the Underworld and lives at the doors of cemeteries, Oyá, with Francisco Aguabella. Then we ponder and reflect about death with a Calypso by Roaring Lion, the classic "St James Infirmary" by Cab Calloway, two versions of Sammy Dead/Sammy No Dead (a tight Ska!), a great classic Guaracha by Cortijo y su Combo with Ismael Rivera singing, "El negro bembón"; and some old stories about dead lovers, such as "Shirin and Farad" by Jonathan Richman (a Persian story from the 12th Century) and the classic Romance "Delgadina" done by Lydia Mendoza and her family.
Then some Cumbia with Juaneco y su Combo, and we also celebrate World Vegan Day with Yma Sumac's "Monos" ("dicen que los monos no saben querer / y el mono más chico, caramba, quiere a su mujer") and John Fahey's amazing "Death of the Clayton Peacock", plus two Blues by Charley Patton ("Oh Death") and Reverend Gary Davis ("Death Don't Have No Mercy", in the original version from 1960). This last song is not complete, for which we apologize.

Build then the ship of death, for you must take
the longest journey, to oblivion.

And die the death, the long and painful death
that lies between the old self and the new.

Already our bodies are fallen, bruised, badly bruised,
already our souls are oozing through the exit
of the cruel bruise.

Already the dark and endless ocean of the end
is washing in through the breaches of our wounds,
already the flood is upon us.

Oh build your ship of death, your little ark
and furnish it with food, with little cakes, and wine
for the dark flight down oblivion.

Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue - La Casa Encantada - Show #5 - Friday, Oct. 11 2013

TODAY WE CELEBRATE COLUMBUS DAY!
On Oct. 12 we commemorate the, ehem, "discovery" of America (aka "India") by Cristóbal Colón, that magical moment in history when the Spaniards arrived from Spain bringing all the advantages of civilization to these barbarous lands: pillage, theft, the Spanish Inquisition, alcoholism, slavery, venereal and other diseases, guns... in one word, PROGRESS!
But mainly, the reason that we are thankful Columbus is that we have A DAY OF VACATION!!
So we bring you a selection of songs about Columbus, or related to his trips, or of resistance to his influence, by artists such as Machito, Fats Waller, Arsenio Rodriguez, Culture, Macbeth the Great, sisters Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, Blind Blake, Jorge Ben and many more!

We have mambos, psychedelic bollywood songs, jazz, blues, rumba columbia, cumbia, calypso, reggae and so on and so forth!
We celebrate with those who celebrate and celebrate with those who do not celebrate!
Let the songs be the judge of the man!

Mister Christopher Columbus
Sailed the sea without a compass
When his men began a-rumpus,
Up spoke Christopher Columbus!
